Hornby Educational Trust is offering fully funded scholarships for experienced English language teachers from countries supported by this fellowship. This prestigious prize promotes capacity building in English language teaching and learning by enabling a one year MEd (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at a leading UK university.
Overview
The A.S. Hornby Educational Trust Scholarship is the flagship English Language Teaching award for teachers and ELT professionals from around the world having demonstrated the potential to make a significant future contribution to English language teaching and teachers in their local communities. The University of Exeter’s MEd TESOL programme has full scholarships for up to ten candidates each year on what is deservedly recognised in the UK and internationally as a leading course and centre of expertise, the Graduate School of Education. Fellows receive extensive financial and professional support as they enhance their TESOL skills and return to lead and innovate in their home context.
Eligibility
For the 2026 A.S. Hornby Scholarship, candidates should:
• Resident and working professional in a low or middle income country (based on the OECD DAC list).
• Have an undergraduate degree comparable to a UK 2:1 or above
• Have a minimum of three years of full-time TESOL or closely related professional experience after completing their degree(s)
• Not already have a Masters or PhD in TESOL/applied linguistics/English or related field from a UK institution
• Promise to return to their home country upon conclusion of the programme
Benefits
Selected scholars receive:
• Tuition fees in full for the one-year MEd TESOL course
• A minimum living-materials stipend of £15,500
• Awards for other academic expenses (warm clothes, dissertation costs, etc.)

Candidates shortlisted will be invited for an online interview from 16 to 25 March 2026.

Applicants who receive an award will then need to apply for admission to the MEd TESOL programme at the University of Exeter.

Deadline and Next Steps
The last date for receipt of all applications is 9th February 2026. Successful applicants will be interviewed in March and notified of the outcome no later than 2 April 2026. Offers are based on a loose conditional scholarship format which is confirmed when the student successfully secures a place of study for MEd TESOL at University of Exeter.
