Who Can Apply?
Eligibility For you to be eligible to apply for the DAAD Scholarship 2026, you need to:
• Have earned a first degree qualifying you for your chosen course of study before October 2026.
• Be admitted or registered in postgraduate Master’s or doctoral studies at a German state or state-recognised university.
• Show an outstanding study performance and high motivation.
• For PhD candidates: conduct independent research or participate in a strctured doctoral programme.
• Have worked professionally for at least 2 years in development fields, including doctorate holders applying for a Master degree course.
• Demonstrate language skills in German (minimum level B1) or English (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent).
• Be currently residing in your home country or country of study when applying.
Special circumstances (e.g. disability, caring for dependents, refugee status) may also be relevant. There is a not hard and fast upper age limit, although some schemes impose their own limits.

• Monthly Allowance: For Master’s students (€992); for PhD candidates (Ph.D. level starting at €1,300; further increase on 2026)
• Insurance: Health, casual and personal liability insurances.
• Travel: Round trip between your home country and Germany.
• Housing Subsidy: Monthly rent support.
• Family support: Extra stipend for accompanying spouse and children.
• Language Courses: Financial assistance for German courses and examination fees (TestDaF, DSH).
• Cost of Research: Occasionally, funding for internships and thesis costs.
Please note: There are hardly any tuition fees at German universities, thus DAAD support only includes a living and travel allowance.
How to Apply
To do this, complete the following pages of your application form:
• Go to the DAAD scholarship database, input your specific field and level of study and find a programme that best suits you!
• Get everything you need together (see below).
• Register with the DAAD portal and apply.
• Submit your documents in the required format and language (German or English).
• Apply before the due date and wait for approval.
• If short-listed, be available for interviews or further information on dates and times above.
Tip: Be sure to carefully read the special program-specific guidelines in order to best customize your application and comply with all required eligibility criteria.
Required Documents
Prepare clear, certified copies of:
• Your CV (max. 3 pages) containing a summary of educational, professional, and co-curricular activities.
• Degree certificates and transcripts from university, translated if necessary.
• A motivation letter that explains your educational and career plans as well as why you selected the university.
• 2 – 3 academic references (PhD two of which must be from PhD qualified supervisors).
• Certificates of language (German or English) as specified in the programme.
• A research proposal or statement of purpose for candidates pursuing a doctorate.
• Documented evidence of professional experience (certificates for employment), if available.
• Copy of passport and personal documents.
• Depending on your situation, other documents (such as medical certificates or family status proofs) might be required.
Important Dates & Deadlines
Deadlines depend on individual country and scholarships stream but typically close between June and August 2025. Please regularly check the DAAD portal for details and updated dates – especially you will need to verify regional.
Application cycle: Early Spring of the year
Application available: From Jan – March of every
Close of applications: Few weeks prior to commencement of second semester on each Faculty.
Deadline window: June–August (varies by country/program)

Give yourself plenty of time to submit in case you encounter any last-minute problems (procrastination can lead to late or incomplete applications, which are not accepted).
