With an invaluable founding donation from XTX Markets and the support of the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, this prestigious scholarship gives some of the world’s most promising young scientists, mathematicians (including applied mathematics), engineers and technologists to undertake full‐time postgraduate study at the University of Edinburgh.


Overview

Global Talent Fund’s BIG (Backing Invisible Geniuses) Scholarships are for students who have won medals at accepted International Olympiads in mathematics, science or engineering including Olympiads related to these disciplines. Offering full tuition, living expenses, research grants and networking opportunities, the program supports the next generation of global STEM leaders. The University of Edinburgh is one of a handful of partner institutions who will host BIG Scholars.


Eligibility

To be eligible for the BIG Scholarships 2026, all candidates must:

• Have received a gold, silver or bronze medal at an international Olympiad in one of the subject areas being taught (IMO, IOI, IPhO, IChO; IBO; EGMO).
• Intend to begin a full-time postgraduate program degree at the University of Edinburgh in 2026–27.
• High academic performance or excellent potential in STEM (science, technology, engineering or maths) and high innovative capacity.
• Be an international student of any citizenship.
• Satisfy the normal entry requirements for postgraduate study at their chosen institution.


Scholarship Benefits

Successful scholars will receive:

• Full tuition fees at Edinburgh for postgraduate study.
• A living stipend to cover everyday expenses.
• Assistance with internships, research placements or conferences on academic pursuits.

How to Apply

Apply for Admission:
You must apply for a postgraduate programme of study at the University of Edinburgh in 2026–27 that is on our list of eligible programmes and you have applied to meet all departmental deadlines and requirements.

Once you have received an offer (conditional or unconditional), login to MyEd using the link in the top right corner of this web page and access EUCLID via the undernoted icon and apply for a scholarship through EUCLID / Applicant Hub.

Fill out the Application Form:
Tell us about your Olympiad medals, academic achievements and why you believe you’re eligible for an IOI Scholarship.

Attach Supporting Documents:
Transcripts, medal certificates, letters of recommendation and any other such documents (CV, research proposals, portfolios).

Apply by Deadline:
Fully complete your application before 23:59 UK time on 31 March 2026. Candidates in the shortlist will be notified to attend an interview.


Required Documents

• Certified copies of official academic transcripts or degree certificates.
• Evidences for medal winners in well-known Olympiads.
• Your postgraduate programme offer letter from the University of Edinburgh.
• Personal statement/ scholarship essay (see below).
• Two or more letters of recommendation from teachers, advisers or employers.

Supporting documents (CV, portfolios, research proposals) are optional.


Application Deadline

The deadline for all scholarships applications is 23:59 (UK Time) on 31 March 2026. Early submission is encouraged, as late or partial applications will not be accepted.
